All were Amazed –Acts2:12…
“Standing face to face with the world, we often sense a spirit
which surpasses our ability to comprehend. The world is too much for us. It is crammed with marvel. The glory is not an exception
but an aura that lies about all being, a spiritual setting of reality.”
― Abraham Joshua Heschel,
Thunder in the Soul: To Be Known By God
Sunday, May 19th we celebrate Pentecost, and the birth of the church. Fifty days after Easter, we read Acts 2: 1-21 as it invites us to experience the awe and amazement that occurred as diverse people of differing languages were able to hear and understand each other through the power of the holy spirit. Pondering this season of Easter leading us into Pentecost, I have opened myself to the awe and amazement that surrounds us. On April 8th we all stopped, put on our special sunglasses, and watched the awesome display of the movement toward a total eclipse. The temperature dropping ten degrees in darkness, removing our sunglasses, we experienced the wonder created by the ring around the sun as it was covered by the moon. The divine nature of God’s magnificent creation was fully displayed. Have you noticed the daylight hours are getting longer and the sun is shining brighter. The grass is an amazing shade of green, and all the perennials are beginning to blossom. Entering stores we are greeted by colorful baskets and flats of colorful annuals. The Easter season at LCC has been an amazing time, our church family has joined together (hopefully after this printing) to meet the goals of our Give Gather Grow campaign for the renovation of the Social Hall and accessibility to the West Clifton church entrance. Our team, the support it has received and the generosity on display is astonishing. As we look toward May 19th, the Celebration of Pentecost and our high school and college graduates, I am amazed at how quickly time moves forward. It seems like only yesterday, our graduates were our youth. Beth Abbott’s and Sandie King’s aging and spirituality class has been well attended. It celebrates the amazing gift of aging and the opportunities to fully embrace life and appreciate the gift of each new day. As we ponder the power of amazement, how is it with you? How might you begin each day in wonder? How might you open your hearts, minds, and spirits to fully experience God’s amazing creation and the wonders that surround us in this, God’s creation?
Blessings, grace and peace,
Rev. Catherine
